Piano Accompanists
A list of accompanists is provided below. Having piano accompaniment is a very important part of performing many solos. The piano provides a foundation of harmony and rhythm that adds musical context to the melody you play on your instrument. An accompanist helps the performer establish a better sense of style, momentum, tone color, and dynamic contrast. Moreover, the composer often writes melodic interplay between the two instruments to add interest and expression to the piece. Students and families are strongly encouraged to work with a piano accompanist.
Here are some tips for selecting and working with a piano accompanist:
When contacting an accompanist, be sure to set rehearsal dates. Two or three rehearsals is typical. Ask where the rehearsals will be held and how long they will last. An adult family member should attend the rehearsal(s) along with the student.
The accompanists listed on the EMB website have experience accompanying students for the solo and ensemble festival. You may work with an accompanist not listed on the website, but please select someone who has the technical skills to play piano well and who will also follow the student while performing.
You may wish to ask the pianist to record the accompaniment at the first rehearsal so you can use the recording during home practice sessions. It would be appropriate for you to provide the recording device (when in doubt, use a cell phone to record).
Most accompanists charge a set fee for their work with the soloist or ensemble. It is customary to pay your pianist for his or her services on or before the day of the performance. Including a thank you note with your payment would be a nice touch.
Give the piano music to your accompanist as soon as possible so he or she has plenty of time to prepare for your first rehearsal. Also, as soon as you know your festival performance time and room location at Bryan Middle School, be sure to communicate this information with your accompanist.
